On the evening of April 21, 2025, SpaceX launched its third Bandwagon rideshare mission, marking the 300th orbital flight from Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 40. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 8:48 p.m. EDT, carrying a suite of diverse payloads into a mid-inclination orbit.
Mission Overview
The Bandwagon-3 mission is part of SpaceX's SmallSat Rideshare Program, offering affordable access to space for small satellite operators. This flight included payloads from international partners, showcasing the global collaboration in space exploration.
Payload Highlights
PHOENIX 1 Reentry Capsule: Developed by German company Atmos Space Cargo, PHOENIX 1 aims to demonstrate reentry capabilities using an inflatable heat shield. The capsule is expected to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean after completing one orbit, marking a significant step for European reentry technology.
425Sat-3: The third satellite in South Korea's 425 Project, this synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite enhances the country's Earth observation and reconnaissance capabilities.
Tomorrow-S7: Part of Tomorrow Companies Inc.'s constellation, this satellite contributes to advanced weather forecasting and climate monitoring efforts.
European Space Milestone
With the deployment of PHOENIX 1, the Bandwagon-3 mission marks a historic first for Europe’s reentry capabilities. Developed by Atmos Space Cargo, the PHOENIX capsule is designed to survive atmospheric reentry using an inflatable heat shield, a technology never before tested by a European private company in orbit.
If successful, PHOENIX 1 will become Europe’s first commercial spacecraft to reenter from orbit and return to Earth, laying groundwork for future point-to-point space transport and autonomous return systems across the continent.
Falcon 9 Booster Performance
The Falcon 9 first stage booster, designated B1090, completed its third flight, having previously supported the O3b mPOWER-E and Crew-10 missions. Approximately eight minutes after liftoff, the booster executed a precise landing at Landing Zone 2 (LZ-2) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
Looking Ahead
The successful deployment of diverse payloads on Bandwagon-3 underscores the effectiveness of SpaceX's rideshare program in providing cost-effective access to space. As more international partners participate, missions like this pave the way for increased collaboration and innovation in the space industry.
